I haven't posted anything on this blog in the longest time, so I wanted to take a moment to say how much I enjoyed Superman/Supergirl: Maelstrom. This five part DC miniseries concluded in January. If you can still find it, do so. It's well written and drawn and, remarkably, is self contained. That's right, fanboys, you don't have to buy twenty other books or miniseries to understand what's going on. Oh sure, you need to have a basic familiarity with Superman, Supergirl, Darkseid, and Apokolips, but the story isn't wrapped up in an never-ending multi book "crisis" or "war" like so many books are today.

Also, I'm quite liking Marvel's adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Dorothy actually has SILVER slippers in it. Way to be true to the source material, Marvel!

Whatever the reason, the original non-suck versions of the original non-suck Star Wars trilogy are finally being released on DVD. Mind you, they are in 2 disc sets with the suck versions, but what are you gonna do? They are only available for a limited time, 'cause he's still a bastard that way.

Unbelievably, Lucas also wants to sell you a t-shirt commemorating what a fucking idiot he is.

I see on IMBD that two former Supermen attended the premier of Superman Returns. "How is that possible?" you ask. Aren't most of the previous ones dead? It's possible if you count Shaquille O'Neal who you may recall played that other Superman, John Henry Irons, in the 1997 movie Steel. The other former Superman was of course Dean Cain of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.

Former Superboy Gerared Christopher was also there as was Smallvile's Lex Luthor, Michael Rosenbaum.

Superman Returns

I went to the 10pm advanced screening of Superman Returns last night. Boy, am I glad I did. I loved it. Ok, I really really liked it. I had a few minor problems that kept this from being the prefect Superman movie. Still, I have to say that it's the best live action effort yet.

SPOILER ALERT!

Lets just get the stuff I didn't like out of the way first.

1) The costume. It's not good. The neck line is all wrong. The texture, the belt, the boots, and the "S" are all wrong. I don't know what they were thinking.

2) The kid. Not a fan of the illigitimate son of Superman plot line. I didn't like it when Superman and Lois slept together in Superman II and I don't care for Lois as an unwed mother in Superman Returns. They've also set Lois up as a big fat liar. She got everyone thinking this guy Richard is the father when he clearly isn't. Richard seems to think he's the father as well. True, Superman is also inherently a liar with the whole Clark Kent thing, but this is different. I feel really bad for Richard. Aparently Lois has been stringing him along for years. Now with Superman back, I'm sure she'll never set a date for the wedding. Maybe Richard will be killed by a super-villian in the next movie and clear up this little love triangle.

3) The previous movies. I wish they had taken a Batman Begins aproach to Superman Returns and not tried to link it to the previous movies. I never cared for Marlon Brando as Jor-El or that vision of Krypton in general.

Right, on to the good stuff.

1) Brandon Routh. Not only does he look like Christopher Reeve, he sounds like him too. I wonder if he worked on that. Routh looks good in the bad suit. He also puts some effort into acting differently as Clark then as Superman as opposed to say George Reeve or Dean Cain.

2) The Bad Guys. Kevin Spacey is great as Lex Luthor and he's bald most of the time unlike say Gene Hackman or John Shea. His henchpeople were also good. The lovely and talented Parker Posey was great as Kitty Kowalski, essentially the new Miss Teschmacher. Kal Penn and David Fabrizio were in particular were amusing henches, though Penn's amusement mostly comes from recongnizing him as Kumar.

3) The Daily Planet. Liked Sam Huntington as the new Jimmy. Frank Langella was good as Perry but he's no Lane Smith. Lois was nice to look at, but she was no Teri Hatcher either.

4) The cameos. Noel Neill (Lois Lane from both the Kirk Alan movie serial and from The Adventures of Superman tv show) and Jack Larson (Jimmy Olson from The Adventures of Superman) both have cameo appearences. Neil also had a cameo in Superman the Movie and both apeared in the Superboy episode "Paranoia."

5) The efects. Best yet. They're just great. At no point does Superman look like he's hanging in front of a blue screen or like a cgi cartoon.

On the whole it's a great movie. Go see it now.

Superman Returns gets 5 out of 5 fanboy fans.

X-Men III: The Last Crapburger

Judas Priest, where to start? Ok, let me give you a small spoiler alert! Most of my spoilers are already revealed in the commercials, so as I say- a small alert. Ummm...ok...This movie sucked. I saw it with Bill and his nephew Brandon. If you asked all three of us, we'd probably give you three different sets of reasons why it sucked, which equals a whole lot of sucking. Bill hasn't posted here in forever, but I'm hoping he'll login and tell us why he thought it sucked.

Of course there's the basic it-wasn't-like-the-comic complaint. Anyone who goes to a comic book movie knows that there's probably going to be a little bit of that. Even Josie and the Pussycats wasn't terribly faithful to the source material. But damn! There is some serious deviation going on in X-Men III. It's been a problem since the first movie but now... I'm talking people dying who have no business dying. And the Dark Phoenix storyline? Well, it's pretty watered down.

Then there's the basic premise. Maybe I'm just a nitpicky science nerd, but it seems to me that if you're going to write a movie, or for that matter a comic book, about mutants, you might want to open a dictionary at some point and look up the word "mutation." You can't "cure" mutation with an antibody. That's just stupid. Why don't the folks writing X-Men go ahead and give up on the pretense of science and just call it magic. 'Cause that's what's going on here, fucking magic. And thene there's the standard movie problem with elementary physics, like with what happens to Jugernaut at one point.

And where's Alan Cumming? Alan Cumming makes any movie better. See the afore mentioned Josie and the Pussycats, for example. Yes, do that. Don't go see X-Men III. Go rent Josie and the Pussycats instead. It's a great movie. It's got fun music, and Parker Posie, and nobody dies. Jesus, why couldn't they make a sequel to that instead?

And now here's a picture of Rebecca Romijn as Mystique. Why? Because I like her, damnit! She's a trooper. And the way she can mimic those other actors, amazing! Someone please put this woman in a good movie.

I guess everyone knows by now that Kelsey Grammer is playing the Beast. I think he was a good choice, but SO WHAT? The movie still sucks.

I'm sorry this review isn't a little more coherent, but frankly this movie doesn't deserve a coherent review. That would require me thinking about it more, and I don't want to think about this movie any more than I already have.

Man, Superman Returns better not suck.

Free Comic Book Day Review - Wizards of the Frelling Coast

In 2004, Wizards of the Coast gave us Dungeons and Dragons: Crisis in Raimiton - An Adventure Guide to Dungeons and Dragons for FCBD. It was bad, but at least it was a comic book.

This year WotC's contribution to FCBD was Magic the Gathering Core Set Ninth Edition Player's Guide. I think even Scott McCloud would agree with me that THIS IS NOT A COMIC BOOK! It's a list of cards and a bunch of stuff about how the ninth- NINTH for the love of Bob- edition of Magic is different or the same as previous editions. Ok, the Wolverine Heroclick wasn't a comic book either, but it was related to comics. This is a card game. Maybe for next year someone can convince The United States Playing Card Company to contribute something like The Bicycle Guide to Texas Hold-em.

I've never played Magic the Gathering and I never intend to, but if I did, I think I'd have prefered a free card instead. But it STILL WOULDN'T BE A FREE COMIC BOOK!

Lordy, I hate WotC. Frelling D20. They're like drug deallers, I tells ya.

Free Comic Book Day Review - Heroclix

Wizkids/Heroclix gave out Wolverine figures this year; two of them; a white shirt and a black shirt . The white shirt says "I (heart) Heroclix" on the back. The Black shirt says "WizKids" on the back. I don't play Heroclix often enough to know how good these figures are in game terms, but they look nice.

The Conan story was a standard Conan story. Conan is hired to do something. It goes badly. Conan takes revenge on the guy who hired him. Simple and straight forward. The art is lovely. If you like Conan, you'll like it. If you don't you won't. I did.

Star Wars
Who cares? It's a damn Slave Wars- I mean "Clone" Wars- story. A bunch of slaves- er clone troopers do something. I admit it's well drawn, but again, who cares? If there weren't a Conan stroy attatched to it, I'd use it to wipe my ass. Damn you George Lucas. Damn you to hell.

Free Comic Book Day Review - Bongo Comics

Next up is Bongo Comics Free-For-All, another original FCBD offering, from the people who make Simpsons and Futuramma comics.

It's good to be able to laugh at yourself, isn't it? I mean, I shouldn't be offended that Bongo uses FCBD as an opportunity to make fun of comic book collectors, should I? The first story in the Free-For-All does just that. The rest of the book parodies various comic book cliches like evil dopplegangers and origin stories. I've seen it all before. I saw it all decades ago in a MAD magazine parody called Plastic Sam. At least it was a little funnier than Archie, but not much.

Free Comic Book Day Review - Archie

There weren't quite as many books available to me locally this year, but those are the breaks when you live in an area with only one comic shop. At least Hastings was also participating, but really that just meant I got multiple copies of the same stuff.

Anyway, I'm going to try to review all the books I got one by one. Let's pretend that I'm going alphabetically and start with Archie's 65 Anniversary Bash. Can anyone answer this burning question? Was there a time during Archie's 65 years at which he was actually funny? 'Cause seriously, this book isn't funny. Archie finds out that his dad has been offered a promotion that will mean moving from Riverdale. Archie doesn't seem too upset about having to leave all his friends behind, but decides to wander around town running into everyone he's ever met and telling them the news. During the course of the book we learn that Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Josie & The Pussycats are getting Manga make-overs, Katy Keene will be appearing soon in Archie & Friends, and the Australian duo The Veronicas still have a cross promotional deal with Archie Comics.

I don't think even the youngest reader was surprised when it turns out that Archie doesn't have to move after all. In a fit of self-reflexiveness the gang decide to turn Archie's going away party into a 65th anniversary party for Archie comics.

The one thing I do like about Archie Comic's is that they always put out a special book for FCBD rather than simply reprinting something like DC or Disney. Too bad they can't be funny as well.

And of course Superman Returns opens ten days later on June 30th.

I know I'm out of the loop and behind the curve lately. It has to do with never actually getting inside a comic shop and having a slacker supplier. Anyway I just found out that Marvel is digging up the "New Universe" from whatever maggot infested grave it's been rotting in for a series of Untold tales of the New Universe. Seems it's the 20th anniversary and they want to take a last look at the old New Universe before Warren Ellis reimagines it as a...ummmm.... New New Universe... I guess.

Why is it that while DC is revisiting one of it's greatest triumphs on it's 20th anniversary, namely THE CRISIS, Marvel is revisiting one of it's greatest failures?

Aquaman on TV

Seems Chuck Rozanski, President of Mile High Comics, is having a little trouble. About a week ago he expressed an opinion in his Comics Buyer's Guide column Tales from the Database and in his weekly newsletter. In brief his column was in support of Denmark and freedom of speech/press in general in regards to the ongoing Muslim cartoon controversy. As a result, some of Chuck's Muslim customers have now withdrawn their custom. If you would like to show your support for Chuck and for free speech and you need to pick of a few back issues of oh... I don't know... Trekker for example, then why not click over to MileHighComics.com and put in an order. Mention in the "comments" section that you're placing your order in support of free speech, and Chuck will forward 10% the gross proceeds of your order to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

Buried Treasure - Trekker

Here's another piece of obscurity from my collection of over 7000 comics. (I love saying that.) Trekker was created , written and drawn by Ron Randall and first appeared in Dark Horse Presents #4 (1986.) It was the story of Mercy St. Clair, a licensed bounty hunter or "trekker" set in a future world of space travel and decaying civilization.

After two more appearances in DHP, Trekker got it's own series in 1987. It lasted all of six issues. DHP and the Trekker series were all in black and white. In 1989 Trekker returned in the Trekker Color Special and then wasn't seen again until 1999 when an attempt was made to revive the series as part of the Odyssey imprint of Image comics. The Image series, also in color, consisted of one single issue.

That's a total of 11 appearances. There was also the Trekker Collection trade paperback which included the DHP stories and the first three issues of the regular series. As far as I know it had no original material.

This is a sadly small amount for what was one of the finest books to come out of the 80's B+W explosion. Mercy St. Clair was beautiful, tough, and quite frankly had the finest ass in all of comics. I don't know why she didn't catch on. Maybe she was just ahead of her time.

I will now repeat the name Ron Randall several times in the hope that the next time he googles himself (You know you will Ron. Everybody does.) this page will pop up and he will hear my plea to BRING BACK TREKKER!!

Every now and then I'm going to profile some obscure little Gem from my collection. Today it's Rocket Racoon, a four issue mini-series from Marvel way back in 1985 when I still read Marvel. I haven't reread it yet, but I recall enjoying it at the time. It's a "funny animal" book that's not that funny. Written by Bill Mantlo with pencils by Mike Mignola. That's right, MIKE MIGNOLA!

Rather than go into great detail about the series, I'll just refer you to Keystone Quadrant Online, a website devoted to Rocket Raccoon.

Go out and buy or rent Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. Why? Because my sister Lita Lopez does two of the voices, Kitana and Mileena (who aparently is a clone of Kitana.)

I'm not a follower of the Mortal Kombat fanchise, so I don't know how long time fans feel about this version, but I've been palying the game and it's quite fun. However, there is one cut sceen/boss fight segment that I swear I've seen in another game. I just wish I could remember what it was.

Fantastic Four

I’ve finally seen the Fantastic Four movie. So here at last is my review.

MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD. I don’t think there’s going to be much spoilage, but Bill doesn’t like to know anything about a movie before he sees it, an he still hasn’t seen it.

Any movie adaptation can be viewed two ways.

1)As a work of art on its own completely separate from it’s source material.
2)As an adaptation.

It’s a little hard for me to evaluate the FF movie on it’s own. Someone who’s never read a Fantastic Four comic would be in a better position to do so, but I’ll try. I guess I’d have to say it was just ok. I wasn’t bored, but I wasn’t excited either. It held my attention just enough to keep me from turning it off, but not enough to make me really care about anybody. The effects and action bits are competently done, but are lacking something. I know it’s hard to come up with a good action sequence when it all seems like it’s been done before. It’s even harder now with computer effects to create something that makes the audience go “WOW!” It’s just too easy now to fling cars about and tear down buildings, so we’ve seen it all already. Sadly, FF failed to find a way to make all the smashing and breaking interesting.

The only exception to the competent effects was Mr. Fantastic. I’m not going to blame the filmmakers for this. I think it just might not be possible to do the stretching thing in a live action movie and not have it look silly. Oh, and the Thing looked like a ninja turtle.

Now, on to how good of an adaptation it is. Some things were good and some not so much. Lets start with the origin. I’m sure a lot of FF fans are pissed about it. Changing the origin was almost unavoidable. The decision to set the movie in 2005 and not 1961 was the first change. This most basic decision means that the rest of the origin needs to be changed or at least adjusted. Sneaking onto a government base to launch an experimental rocket before the “commies” beat us too it, just doesn’t make sense in 2005. However, today we have things like the X-Prize, so maybe the writers could have come up with something that still involved an experimental rocket, instead of the space station they decided to go with. Tying Doom’s origin into the 4’s may have saved time, but was, I think, a mistake.

What they did get right was the personalities of the 4. That is to say Reed and Sue didn’t have much personality while Ben and Johnny were a couple of childish assholes, just like in the comics. Bill thinks Jessica Alba is wrong for Sue. I say the Invisible Female is 1) female and 2) blonde. Jessica was female and blonde (and occasionally invisible.) Anyone who thinks there is more to the character than that has read some issues that I haven’t, which is quite likely since I’m not really a big FF fan. Jessica seemed to be trying to give Sue some kind of personality, but I think all she really succeeded in doing was burying her own personality, which is probably what was called for.

Now let’s talk about Doom. What they did to Dr. Victor Von Doom was just inexcusable. They turned him into a capitalist, for Bob’s sake. Not that capitalists aren’t evil, ‘cause they are. But that’s just not who Doom is. They gave him powers that didn’t make much sense. And he becomes a super villain because the bank shut him down, or the board voted him out, or some lame ass capitalist thing. Or maybe it was because Sue didn’t love him. Whatever it was, it all just seemed petty and small. This Doom was no world conqueror, just a sad schmuck who lost his job and his girl at the same time. And what’s with his mask? In the movie it’s some kind of presentation gift from the grateful people of Latveria. It seems that in Latveria when people want to honor you they give you a metal full head mask instead of a plaque or the key to the city. As I said before, I’m not a big FF fan, but I acknowledge their importance to the history of comics. They deserved a better movie than this. Maybe the Roger Corman version wasn’t so bad after all. I can only give the Fantastic Four 3 out of 5 Fanboy Fans.

2- All Star Superman #1. Loved it. This is like the Superman I grew up with. The first issue features a sort of Willie Wonka of genetic engeniering. For the actual Superman I grew up with, check out DC Showcase Presents: Superman.

3- Infinite Crisis #2 MILD SPOILER

This issus does a great job of summing up the Crisis on Infinite Earths for those who were too young (or not even born) or too stupid to have caught it the first time. It is also an indictment of almost the entire post Crisis universe. Bill has refered to recent events in the DC universe as the Marvelization of DC. Well, if the Superman of Earth 2 gets his way, this crisis will actually mark the END of Marvelization, and none too soon.

Fantastic Four DVD

I never did get to see The Fantastic Four in the theaters but it's coming out on DVD December 6th.

I'll eventually post a review when I get the chance to see it. It's at least got to be better than the Roger Corman version. If any of you have seen it yourselves, please post a quick review in the comments section.

Dungeons & Dragons 2: Electric Boogaloo!

I saw Dungeons & Dragons II: Wrath of the Dragon God on the SciFi channel this weekend. I don't think this was originally intended to be a direct to cable movie, but I'm glad I didn't pay money for it. It was certainly more D&D than the first one. Whether or not that a good thing depends on how much you like D&D. It's very clear what class each character belongs to. Most of them are even referred to by their class name a few times. There was one character that I wasn't' sure if he was meant to be a fighter or a paladin, but who cares really? The plot itself seems right out of a D&D module and plenty of recognizable D&D monsters show up. I wonder if they used a random encounter table while writing the script.

Unlike the first movie, this one took itself way too seriously, but it wasn't good enough to warrant such seriousness.

Only one actor from the original returned.

The effects were decent, but I'm afraid I can only give Dungeons & Dragons II: Wrath of the Dragon God two out of five Fanboy fans.

I saw Serenity yesterday. You should see it too. It's incredible.

Serenity is the follow up to Joss Whedon's short lived Sci-fi TV show, Firefly. If you didn't already know that, please deduct ten points form your geek quotient and report to the administrator for disciplinary action immediately.

Fans of Firefly will love Serenity, unless you are the kind of fan who doesn't like it when things change. You know who you are. You're the kind of fan who says things like, "Buffy and Angel should be together forever!" If you're that fan, you might not like it, because some things change- permanently. Joss Whedon has always cared more about telling a good story that makes you feel something than maintaining the status quo and pleasing fans who just want to see the same episode over and over. I won't say anymore than that. I don't want to give anything away.

If you haven't seen the show, I think they did a good enough job of explaining things so you won't be lost, but you'll like it more if you already know and care about the characters. So go rent, buy or borrow the Firefly dvd set.

The only draw back in the movie is that Jewel Staite who plays Kaylee has lost some weight. Joss asked her to put on a few pounds for the series. He wanted Kaylee to look like a girl who eats a few cheese burgers. Since the show ended, Jewel seems to have gone back to her normal weight and I guess Joss didn't ask her to put the pounds back on. She looked better before. She wasn't fat by any means. She just didn't look like a skinny little thing. Now she does. Adam Baldwin seems to have slimmed down some as well. He looks smaller and less intimidating.

I give Serenity 5 out of 5 fanboy fans.

JSA CLASSIFIED #3 - I really thought this was going to clear stuff up. But so far....

SUPERGIRL #2 - It would be nice to read a good Supergirl comic. Maybe this will turn into one.

Black Panther #8 - I really liked this book when John Romita Jr. was drawing it. He isn't drawing it anymore.

Captain America #10 - I've really enjoyed this book. the best Captain America I can remember.

Ultimates 2 #8 - I love this book. Even though they seem to have killed Hawkeye last issue. I have real problems with that.

These are the books I'm buying this week.

Another light week for DC from me.

ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN, THE BOY WONDER #2 - We have mentioned the first issue of this book. Not really well liked, even by the fanboys. Gonna give it another shot though. I think I am on record with my thoughts on Miller's writing. Bit of a disappointment so far.

DESOLATION JONES #3 - Another decompressed comic from the inventor of decompressed comics. If you wonder why comics that used to take 1-2 issues to tell a story now take six, blame Warren Ellis. I do.

JLA #118 - The Marvelization of DC continues. Backstabbing, shadows and grimacing. Well-written and lovingly drawn. Batman will kick the collective asses of his brainwashers. Because he's Batman, the baddest Mofo in all of DC. That's not me that sez it. It's DC.

JSA #77 - The best Super-team book, period. I know. Blasphemy coming from a card carrying true-believer. But what can I do? Make better team books, Marvel. I should have been buying it all along. Sorry, Geoff.

THE RANN/THANAGAR WAR #5 (OF 6)- I like this one the least of the preludes to Infinite Crisis. Too much going on for me to understand it all and remember with each month. I'll give it another read when I have all of them in hand. But it's pretty.

Marvel's light too. My wallet just stopped crying.

Daredevil Vs. Punisher #4- David Lapham (Stray Bullets) Writes and draws. Okay. Still waiting for something to happen.

Gravity #4- Very nice teen Super-hero book written by Sean McKeever.

Powers #13 - Crime and Super-heroes Written by Bendis and drawn by Oeming. You really should be reading this book. Shame on you if you're not.

Pulse #11 - Still unsure about this book. Great Hawkeye story last issue. This issue...Luke Cage and Jessica Jones' baby. Seriously.

Thor: Blood Oath #1 - My nephew likes Thor.

Ultimate X-men #63 - Yeah, yeah. It's better than you think.

These are the books that I plan to buy. My comics shop is a little on the crappy side, so I may not not be able to get everything.

And I do have a pull list, but a senior citizen is doing the pull lists. And she doesn't know anything about comics. She's kind of like Dominic.

Legion of Super-Heroes #9

We're going to try something here. From now on I (Dominic) will post in blue, and Bill will post in red, so you can tell at a glance who posted what. If we decide it looks like crap, we'll change it. So, here we go...

I just got Legion of Super-Heroes #9 in the mail. (I subscribe.) I haven't read it yet, but the cover informs me that it is the Wizard Book of the Month! Suck on that, Lil' Avengers! Seriously though... since I haven't read it yet, let me just give a general review of the series.

I like this new book, Now normally "soft reboots," "Retcons," etc. really piss me off. I hated Superman: Birthright for example. I'm also not one of those who thought the Crisis was necessary because the multiverse was "too confusing." But let's face it. The Legion's history is not only long but ever since the crisis, it's been convoluted, confusing, and downright incomprehensible. I still don't understand what the final deal was with the whole Superboy/Mon-El/Lar-Gand/Valor thing. I blame John Byrne. Bearing that in mind, I can't really complain that DC decided to scrap the Legion and start over. In fact I'd have to agree that it was needed. Hey, It got me back on board.

This new legion has most of the old favorites, but has a slightly different flavor. If you haven't tried the book yet, here's the title page blurb-

Of course not everyone agrees on what the Legion stands for and what it means to be a Legionaire.

Legion of Super-Heroes is written by Mark Waid and normally drawn by Barry Kitson (#8 had a guest artist.) It's well written and well drawn. I give it 4 out of 5 Fanboy fans.

Not Ultimate at All

This is not good news.

One of my favorite comics is the Ultimates Vol. 2 published by our pals at Marvel.

Some really cool stories by Mark Millar and great art by Bryan Hitch. We all knew they were leaving someday. And that day is hanging over us all now.

The replacements have been named.

Jeph Loeb and Joe Mad.

That's right Joe has made his triumphant return to comics to piss in the pages of one of my favorite books. It would be one of your favorites if you read it.

But no more.

The big ideas are gone. Jeph Loeb is a good writer, but he excels at the smaller, personal super-hero stories. The Ultimates is no place for that. But that's not the worst part.

Joe Madureira. Ugh. Take a look at the painstakingly rendered page I have so thoughtfully provided.

Now...I haven't seen any of the artwork that Joe is doing on the book. Not one stroke of the pencil. But I don't want him anywhere near this book. I am sure that he has legions of fans out there. I am not one of them. In fact, I hate his artwork...I don't like the over exaggerated manga style he has. And it will be an extra special blight on the eyes after getting to see Bryan Hitch's version of them for the last three or so years.

Joe! Don't do it!

For the love of Jeff...stay away from this book.

Go draw something for DC. Like Superman.

The Walking Dead

Who doesn't like zombies?

Well, if you don't you're a moron.

They're loads of fun. They're like ants in this book...They're everywhere.

I am admittedly late in jumping on this book. I have seen it but I never pulled the trigger. Until my LCS accidentally ordered a pile of the first trade. He didn't want them and couldn't return them. So he cut the price in half just to get rid of them.

So what idiot passes on a five dollar TPB. Certainly not this idiot.

The really cool thing about this book is that it takes it's time. It's showing what the world would be like in a world full of zombies.

There's none of the standard three act crap...
Act 1: The Trigger...how it all happened...you won't find any of that here. We still don't know. And I don't care. It isn't what the book is about. We may find out, we may not. It doesn't matter.
Act 2: Figuring out what the problem and how to fix it. In this book the problem is surviving...that's it. And it's not easy. Don't get attached to anybody because you could turn the page and that guy or gal will be dead. It's cool as hell.
Act 3: Fix the problem. There isn't a magic formula to set everything right. The survivors just have to deal with it.

None of the above crap is getting in the way of a really cool comic.

Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Here is the cover for part two of the epic masterpiece, Teen Titans: Flaming Crapburger. Bill says our local comic shop sold out of part one. What the hell is wrong with people? I told him to let them keep the one they were holding for me. The Titans are off my list.

MY FAVORITE SUPERHERO MOVIE

I'm not trying to turn this into a DVD release site, but I just found out that my favorite superhero movie is finally being released on DVD. Hero at Large will be available in just five days. I CAN'T WAIT! I love this movie. I owned it on VHS once, but I loaned it to someone and never got it back. However, since most of my videos were stolen back in December, I'd need a new copy anyway.

If you've never seen it, buy or rent it as soon as possible. You won't regret it. Here's the description from Amazon.com-

Batman Begins DVD

The release date for Batman Begins on DVD isn't until October 18, but if you just can't wait you can pre-order it now.

Batman Begins is by far the best live action Batman yet. Of course the best version is still the animated series. But I'm looking forward to future installments in the series.

If you liked Christian Bale as Batman, I recommend renting Equilibrium (assuming you haven't seen it already.) It's a beautiful Orwellian gun ballet.

All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder

I hate to do this, I really do, but today I've got to call suck on my own team for the second time this week.

I just finished reading All Star Batman & Robin the Boy Wonder. Three pages of issue one are devoted to Vicki Vale standing around in her underwear followed by two pages of her getting dressed. That's five pages or over a fifth of a twenty two page book. And what important plot points or character traits are revealed in these five pages? Vicki Vale doesn't like Batman but really likes Bruce Wane. Oh and Vicki Vale looks good in her underwear, that is if you think Jim Lee's art in general looks good. I'm not a fan. Well, I'm sure Vicki's underwear will be important later in the story so I'm sure it was important to establish that she looks good in it right away in the first issue.

Judas priest, who wrote this crap? Oh, it's Frank Miller. I forgot. He's a frelling genius. Nevermind what I said. This book is brilliant! Thank God for Frank Miller. He's the best we've got. Run right out and pick up a copy of All Star Vicki Vale. Sorry, I ment All Star Batman & Robin the Boy Wonder.

Best Movie

Bill says that Sin City is the best comic book adaptaion ever. He may be right. I'll have to think about it. American Splendor and Ghost World are both pretty good. By all accounts Sin City is certainly the most accurate, which is a nice change. That makes it the best adaptation, but does that make it the best movie? I mean could a movie that is not true to it's source material still be a good movie (yes), and if so are any of them better than Sin City?

If Sin City is the best comic book movie, which is the best SUPERHERO movie, and which is your favorite? ('cause best and favorite aren't always the same thing.) The movie doesnt' have to be based on a comic as long as it's about a superhero or heroes, eg. Unbreakable or The Fantastics. You can also count movie length cartoons even if they were never in the theater such as Last Son of Krypton, The Batman/Superman Movie, or Return of the Joker.

Come to think of it, I haven't read American Splendor or Ghost World, so I don't know if Sin City is the most accurate adaptation.

Here's where I say something nice about Marvel. The Spider-man movies are better than the live action Batman movies. Except of course for Batman Begins. And if it weren't for those damn organic webshooters, they might have beat Batman Begins too.

A moment to clarify

Superman: The Animated Series

As I have gone about my Sunday business here at Castle Zombie, I have had the first season of Superman: TAS in my DVD Player.

It's a damn fine show.

The Play all button is highly recommended if you are puttering around the house or castle.

Just a real pleasure to look at and watch.

See, I can be nice.

SIN CITY comes out on DVD this Tuesday, Buy it...It's the best comic adaptation ever.

I saw it in the theatre....With Dominic. He liked it as well. No matter what he may say here.

Frank Miller, in my mind, is this the best comics writer we have.
And he cut his teeth on Marvel characters which is why Dominic thinks he's not.

He thinks it's Alan Moore.

Another reason.....probably because Frank Miller has Batman routinely kick Superman's ass.

I have thoughts on this as well. But I'll give Dominic first chance to opine on that topic. Since his love affair with Superman began as soon as he landed here on earth.
